My paintings are about presence - both real or implied - through absence. I'm extremely interested in the silence that can be created within painting. With my work, I'm asking the viewer to complete a narrative: trying to touch on common human emotion, and experience. I am interested in the notion of ambiguity: the narrative being read differently by individuals depending on their own thoughts and experiences.
My work is about more than meets the eye and aims to raise the suspicion that a significant segment of the work demands a forensic eye. In my work I try to chalk an out line portrait of the social body and it's current disorders. I sometimes work with those who are viewed as living on the fringes of the social order: the substance misuser, the homeless and those damaged by a fractured social or family background.
Ipaint on reclaimed plywood, as well as holding elements of past use, this material has a strength and durability. It allows me to add and remove paint from the surface, mixing traditional and contempory media such as, oil paint and gesso, along side spray paint. Working mostly with a reduced dark, tertiary pallet creates a shadowy and sometimes grotesque drama.
